About Lil Nas X

Everyone knows that Lil Nas X is an amazing talent. His musical style is a combination of pop rap, hip hop, and country rap with elements of trap, pop rock, and traditional rock mixed in. He also credits LGBTQ artists Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator as inspirations and for helping him get to be comfortable in his sexual identity.

Over the course of his career, he’s become a widely celebrated performer. During the 62nd Grammy Awards, he was the most-nominated male artist. He’s won multiple awards including MTV Video Music Awards’ “Song of the Year” as well as recognition by Forbes as one of the 25 most influential people on the Internet in 2019. The Trevor Project has even awarded him with their inaugural Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year Award in 2021.

Suffice to say that he’s an important artist. But where did he come from?

Early Career

Young Lil Nas X, who was born Montero Lamar Hill, was said to have gotten his start in music in the late 2010s. He isolated himself from “outside-of-class activities” during his teen years and spent a lot of time online building his online presence. At the time he wasn’t sure where to focus his creativity.

In fact, in an interview with Rolling Stone, he mentions that he started doing Facebook comedy videos then moved over to Instagram and eventually to Twitter. And it was on Twitter where he finally made his break and started going viral.

During this time, he ran a Nicki Minaj fan twitter. But he denied being a fan because he was worried about being outed as gay. Mostly because of the reality of how unaccepting of homosexuality the rap community traditionally has been. But Minaj noticed the tweets and offered positive support for Lil Nas X, which may have helped nudge him to music as a path to success.

He began writing and recording songs in 2018 and adopted the name Lil Nas X as a tribute to the rapper Nas. Then he released his first mixtape on Soundcloud.

But his breakthrough came with the release of his country rap song, “Old Town Road”, which became an instant hit on TikTok thanks, in part, to its use for the Yeehaw challenge meme.

LIl Nas X Today

Lil Nas X’s savvy use of the internet has led to him finding success. Even with the backlash that some rap fans and artists have thrown his way for coming out. He has recently even collaborated with Riot Games for the 2022 League of Legends World Championship.
